The U.S. Department of State has issued a Worldwide Caution dated March 22, 2026, warning Americans to exercise increased caution when traveling abroad.
The advisory applies worldwide, with special emphasis on the Middle East, and comes as the department says U.S. diplomatic facilities, including some outside that region, have been targeted. The notice also warns that groups supportive of Iran may target U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans around the world.
In addition to those security concerns, the State Department said periodic airspace closures could disrupt travel, an issue that could affect routes, schedules, and connections even for travelers who are not heading directly to the areas at the center of the warning. The advisory does not tell Americans to stop traveling internationally. Instead, it urges U.S. citizens to review official guidance carefully before departure, stay alert while abroad, and follow updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
What Americans Should Do Before Leaving The Country
The State Department is urging Americans heading abroad to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, a free service that allows U.S. citizens to receive alerts and messages from embassies and consulates. According to the agency’s STEP guidance, the program can send security alerts, health information, weather, natural disaster notifications, and other updates that may affect travel. The department also says STEP makes it easier for embassy officials to contact Americans or their emergency contacts during a crisis.
On the Worldwide Caution page, the agency also directs travelers to follow its security updates channel on WhatsApp and the TravelGov account on X. Before departure, the State Department says travelers should read the advisory for their destination, check for recent embassy or consular alerts, and continue monitoring official guidance while abroad. For Americans with upcoming international trips, that means taking a few practical steps before leaving and staying attentive to official updates throughout the journey.
