Prioritizing shared time together that’s more enriching, intentional, and personalized, experiential honeymoons are so much more than a post-wedding getaway.

The era of crowded resort strips and checklist tourism is fading. More and more, modern travelers are prioritizing slow and sustainable exploration — and unique experiences they’ll carry with them for a lifetime. And when it comes to planning a honeymoon, couples are no different. If there was ever a moment to make travel truly unforgettable, this is it.

According to Fora Travel’s Wedding & Honeymoon Trend Report, released last month, “honeymoons remain one of the most meaningful travel investments couples will ever make.” The source shared that, according to its data, 64% of Fora clients spend $10,000 or more on their honeymoons, and 15% spend $20,000 or more. Additionally, nine in 10 of the company’s advisors said couples are “willing to stretch their budgets for this once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

How To Make Your Honeymoon Actually Unforgettable

The possibilities are genuinely endless, which means the best place to start is with each other. What experiences do you want to share for the first time? Which moments call for pure romance, and which ones are just for the thrill of it? Once you’ve talked through the vibe and the budget, the rest starts to take shape. The goal is simple: build a honeymoon that actually reflects who you two are.

To gain insight into experiential honeymoon options that have shown increased interest among couples, Travel Noire tapped Fora’s co-founder, Henley Vazquez, for the inside scoop.

Take A Safari Honeymoon

Safari honeymoons are undeniably breathtaking experiences. Vazquez highlighted the unique ways they have a romantic charm and are ideal for busy, modern-day couples.

“The safari honeymoon is truly a classic. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton honeymooned on safari, as did Ernest Hemingway,” she shares. “It has long been considered the ultimate romantic getaway, and that hasn’t changed.”

Vazquez further explains: “For modern couples, a safari is typically a 10-day to two-week trip, and that kind of time away is increasingly hard to carve out between work and other commitments. Also, for couples who are planning to start a family, there are many years [of waiting] before children are old enough for a safari. So the honeymoon really is the moment to go.”

“Beyond the timing, there’s something inherently romantic about the experience itself. You’re in tents, out in nature, and sharing bucket-list moments together in settings that feel incredibly special and private. And unlike some other destinations, the pace of a safari actually lends itself to a honeymoon. Game drives anchor the day, but there’s generous downtime to relax, enjoy the setting, and simply be together.”

Sink Into A Bush And Beach Experience

Noted in Fora’s report, Vazquez confirmed that couples are increasingly considering “bush and beach” honeymoons in Africa. During these experiential honeymoons, newlyweds add a beachy destination to their safari trip. Places people might visit as a combo include Kenya and Seychelles, Tanzania and its archipelago, Zanzibar, or South Africa and Mozambique. Vazquez claimed that interest in bush and beach honeymoons is being shown by travelers of all ages.

“Fora’s research looked at honeymoon and wedding travel patterns across generations — Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X,” she noted. “And while there are some differences in how each group approaches wedding planning, the honeymoon data tells a remarkably consistent story. When people are ready to splurge, big, meaningful trips are where they invest.”

“The bush-and-beach itinerary in particular resonates because it delivers the best of both worlds. [It’s] the adventure and beauty of a safari combined with some of the most exotic and hard-to-reach beach destinations in the world — places that feel genuinely special, not just a familiar resort backdrop,” Vazquez added.

Explore Your Roots

Using your honeymoon to embark on heritage tourism is one of the most unique, personal, and bonding experiences you may ever have with your partner. You’ll really want to lean into the local culture, cuisine, community, and customs of where you and your spouse are visiting. That’ll look like going on tours, learning from locals, diving into the destination’s food scene, and immersing yourselves in cultural enrichment opportunities.

Tracing your roots on the ground or simply exploring where your ancestors once were truly makes for memories of a lifetime. Whether you and your partner share elements of your heritage, connecting over your individual ancestries can help you both learn about each other and foster a deeper connection.

One way you could make this type of experiential honeymoon special would be working with a local tailor to get matching or complementary outfits made – one for you and one for your partner – that align with the destination you’ve chosen. In addition to being a shared effort of cultural appreciation toward the location, you’ll have the outfits to always remind you of the love you shared on your honeymoon.

Chase The Thrill

Couples who connect over their shared love of adventure and exhilarating experiences should naturally plan their honeymoon around giddy enjoyment, elevated heart rates, and unforgettable moments. These partners likely love grand gestures, over-the-top events, and stepping out of their comfort zones.

Planning this type of experiential honeymoon can be extra exciting because these lovebirds are already used to thinking outside of the box. Since the sky’s the limit, consider using your post-wedding getaway to climb Mount Kilimanjaro together, soak in Victoria Falls’ Devil’s Pool, or take a helicopter ride overlooking Christ the Redeemer.

Go On A Culinary Adventure

Foodies should absolutely make their honeymoon all about culinary delights and experiences. After all, one of the most special, intimate things you can do with someone you care about is break bread together.

There are many ways you could make this experiential honeymoon perfectly tailored to you and your significant other. You could pick a destination that’s a food scene you’ve always wanted to explore. Or, you could revisit a place tied to significant memories of your relationship, where you may have already enjoyed nice meals together. Either way, be sure to include food tours and cooking classes in your itinerary. Also, plan free time when the two of you can organically stumble upon restaurants, visit food markets, and leisurely chat with locals about the intricacies of the destination’s cuisine.

Prioritize Relaxation And Wellness

This type of honeymoon makes sense for couples who just need to recharge after a grand wedding. While most couples try to fit in some relaxation into their honeymoon, making wellness a full-on, extended experience will require more intentionality. Instead of basic couples massages and sunbathing poolside, think about how you can incorporate personalized experiences that will be relevant to you and your partner.

One example of what that could look like is going on a digital detox retreat where you and your spouse are completely unplugged from social media, notifications, and everyday stresses. Another idea would be to embark on a wellness retreat that would benefit you both. For the latter, med spas and high-end resorts around the world offer specialized wellness programs you can plan your experiential honeymoon around. The programs could revolve around sleep, yoga, hydrotherapy, or nature bathing, to name a few options, so pick what works best for you.
