After travelers endured delays of over three hours going through airport security over the weekend, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has worked to minimize the issue.
As of early November 4, according to the airport’s website, wait times at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at IAH are under 30 minutes — with or without TSA PreCheck — in Terminal A North, Terminal A South, and Terminal E. However, three of the flight hub’s terminals remain closed due to reduced staffing: Terminal C North, Terminal C South, and Terminal D. Moreover, IAH emphasizes that travelers should “plan for longer than normal TSA wait times.” On social media, the flight hub also warned travelers that “TSA wait times may exceed 60 to 75 minutes” on November 4.
According to Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, the reduction of TSA operations and increased airport security wait times are directly linked to the government shutdown. Per Fox 26 Houston, he stated in part on November 2, “The federal government shutdown has impacted TSA staffing and operations nationwide, and Houston Airports is doing everything possible to support our TSA partners and keep passengers moving safely and efficiently.”
“We ask that passengers continue to arrive early and expect extended security wait times until the federal government shutdown is resolved,” he reportedly added.
What Else Is There To Know About The Delays At George Bush Intercontinental Airport?
The government shutdown is wreaking havoc on air travel in the United States. Consequences include TSA agents and air traffic controllers — both essential to airport operations — currently working as essential federal employees without receiving their scheduled pay.
Footage shared by TikTok user @therealdgomes27 showed the severe delays at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, causing lines of passengers extending through several areas of a terminal. Moreover, @mylyfe_k’s video captured lines of waiting travelers even trailing outside.
It’s imperative that travelers stay updated and prepared ahead of flying. Always plan to arrive early and check for updates from your carrier and the airports you’ll be flying to and from regarding delays and cancellations.
Delays at George Bush Intercontinental are significant, as it is Houston’s largest airport. The city’s other main flight hub, William P. Hobby Airport, states on its website that it has a 10-minute wait time for airport security as of this reporting. Still, the latter location says, “As a result of the federal government shutdown, passengers should plan to arrive early at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) to allow extra time for security screening. Passengers may experience reduced screening lanes. At times, TSA wait times may extend beyond 30 minutes. We appreciate your patience and understanding as our partners work to maintain the safety of all passengers.”
